We saw ICE take ten people from a train station two weeks ago. We saw them take two people out of a church this weekend. We saw them smash car windows to drag someone out and kidnap them.
In the face of this kind of violence, what we don’t need are excuses from our local officials. Instead, we need action.
Hudson County must be a place where the law applies equally to everyone, and where residents are protected from abuses of power — no matter who is abusing that power. Recent federal immigration enforcement actions have created fear in our communities, undermined trust in government, and violated basic constitutional rights.
As county commissioners, we cannot control federal immigration policy. But we can ensure that when federal agents operate in Hudson County, they follow state and local law and respect civil rights.
As your Commissioner, Ron Bautista will:
Here’s how he’ll do it:
Codify the fact that immunity doctrines do not protect unlawful conduct
On Day 1, Ron will introduce an ordinance affirming existing law: when there is probable cause that a state or local crime has occurred, no badge places anyone above the law. This policy does not interfere with lawful federal activity or immigration enforcement. It simply enforces laws of general applicability and upholds constitutional standards.
Enforce trespassing laws and protect sensitive locations
County sheriff’s officers will be empowered to enforce existing trespassing laws on public and private property in accordance with New Jersey’s Safe Communities Act. This includes preventing federal agents from entering homes, workplaces, or sensitive locations such as transit areas, hospitals, schools, and county facilities, without a valid judicial warrant.
Deliver Safe and Welcoming Hudson County
Ron will codify an ordinance that County officers will not enforce immigration law or inquire about immigration status. They will not cooperate with ICE on information on our residents without a warrant signed by a judge. Their role is to protect civil rights and enforce state law.
Create real accountability for misconduct
On day 1, Ron will introduce a bill that establishes a consistent process for reviewing allegations of misconduct by federal agents. The County will request that the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office designate a prosecutor to review all such cases. Charging decisions will remain independent and fact-based, free from political influence, while ensuring these cases are taken seriously. Here’s how he’ll do it:
Why This Matters
When residents are afraid to ride public transit, go to work, or seek medical care, public safety breaks down. Protecting civil rights is not just a legal obligation; it is essential to strong, safe communities. The Civil Rights Protection Plan ensures that Hudson County stands for the Constitution, the rule of law, and the dignity of every resident, without exception.
These simple reforms are necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of our community members. As Commissioner, Ron will ensure that Hudson County is a place where every member can live and thrive.
